FOLEY, Ala. - App State women's soccer clinched the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship in a 2-1 victory over Texas State on Monday afternoon in Foley, Ala.
The Mountaineers will advance to the quarterfinal round to face the No. 3 seed from the East Division, Georgia State, on Wednesday at 12 p.m. (ET). The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Mountaineers came out fighting, battling toe-to-toe for the majority of the contest.
The Mountaineers struck early, in the 9th minute, after Breckyn Monteith found the back of the net, recording her ninth goal of the season.
Texas State responded, after Kiara Gonzales scored in the 24th minute, while Kamaria Williams earned the assist.
In the 52nd minute of the contest, Audrey Viso finished off the scoring with her first-career goal in the Black and Gold uniform, putting away a shot.
"I'm really proud of the girls," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "I thought that they stuck to the plan. I thought that they competed. I thought that they absolutely battled, and played every single minute of this match, and put it all together."
Kerry Eagleston tallied seven saves to finish the contest. Eagleston played all 90 minutes for the Black and Gold.
The Mountaineers held the 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, while half of its shots were on goal.
