FOLEY, Ala. - App State women's soccer fell to Georgia State in a 2-1 defeat, in overtime, in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championship on Wednesday afternoon in Foley, Ala.
The Mountaineers fall to 7-11-1 while Georgia State improves to 9-3-7 and advances to the semifinals.
The Panthers got on the board first after Eva Diez Lois scored for the Panthers in the 25th minute of the contest, while Jimena Cabrero earned the assist.
With only 27 seconds left in the first half, the Mountaineers notched its equalizer when Emma McGibany found the foot of Breckyn Monteith, giving the Black and Gold the 1-1 draw going into the break. It was Monteith's 10th goal of the season, putting her in a three way tie for third all-time in program history with Jennifer Rudy (2001) and Sam Childress (2013).
App State found a couple of great chances in the second half, but a pair of shots by Audrey Viso and Olivia Cohen went high. Both teams remained resilient in the second half, forcing the match to go into overtime.
In the 92nd minute of the contest, a header by Eva Diez Lois secured the game-winning goal for Georgia State, while Jimena Cabrero earned the assist off of a corner kick.
"I'm proud of these girls and the way they played. This group has grown so much throughout the season and has a huge opportunity to continue to grow during the off season. I'm grateful for the seniors and their contributions during their career at App. The last day is always the hardest but I am grateful these four went the final mile with us. We will never forget them or their impact on this program," said head coach Sarah Strickland.
The Mountaineers had 11 shots with three being on goal, while holding the 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
