BOONE, N.C. — App State's
Will Formato has been named both the Southern Conference's Wrestler of the Week and the league's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Now ranked 14th n the country at 165 pounds by TrackWrestling, Formato posted a 4-0 decision in a dual match against No. 7 Thomas Bullard on Friday, thanks to a takedown and near fall in the first period.
The Acworth, Ga., native and redshirt sophomore went 2-0 against two additional NC State wrestlers Saturday, outscoring his three opponents from the No. 4 Wolfpack by a 12-0 score over two days. Formato won 2-0 and 6-0, respectively, against Tyler Barnes and Donald Cates at the Wolfpack Round Robin event.
Formato, who majors in risk management and insurance, holds a 3.68 GPA and is 5-1 this season with two victories against NCAA qualifiers from 2020. To be eligible for the Student-Athlete of the Week award, nominees must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better.
The Mountaineers return to the mat Sunday in Boone and open their SoCon schedule against Bellarmine and Davidson at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. The 2020-21 wrestling season is presented by Hungry Howies.
