CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Recording the first two top-25 wins of his career as part of a 5-1 weekend, App State Wrestling's
Tomas Brooker posted a third-place finish at 184 pounds as the Southern Scuffle concluded Sunday.
Brooker won a 5-2 decision against No. 23 Jaden Bullock from Virginia Tech on Saturday night to reach the semifinal round and ended the tournament with a 7-2 decision against No. 20 Christian Hansen from Cornell in the third-place match.
The Mountaineers had five wrestlers reach the second day of competition, as
Aldo Hernandez (141 pounds),
Kai O'Dell (157),
Colt Campbell (174) and
Logan Eller (197) all finished among the final 12 in their brackets.
On the strength of a takedown late in the second period Saturday, Brooker beat Bullock to improve to 3-0 and give App State its first Scuffle semifinalist since 2022. Penn State's Asher Cunningham won by fall in the semifinal matchup, but Brooker bounced back by recording a takedown in each period of an 11-2 major decision against Chattanooga's Landon Jones.
That result put Brooker in the third-place match against Hansen, and Brooker broke a 1-all tie on a takedown with 52 seconds remaining. Hansen recorded an escape 18 seconds later and tried desperately for a late takedown, but Brooker capitalized on an opening and added another takedown with four seconds left.
Hernandez joined Brooker as a quarterfinalist and went 2-2 in Chattanooga, highlighted by a 6-3 decision against Virginia's Kyren Butler prior to a 4-1 quarterfinal loss to No. 14 Tom Crook, a Virginia Tech standout who broke the tie on a takedown with 15 seconds left.
In between an opening-round loss and final-12 loss against a pair of ranked opponents, O'Dell won four consecutive matches. Campbell's 4-2 mark included an 8-6 victory in which he overcame a 6-4 deficit on a takedown with eight seconds remaining in an 8-6 decision Cortilius Vann.
Eller had a 3-1 record with two pins before he lost 4-1 in overtime on a Sudden Victory takedown from No. 19 Payton Thomas of Navy.
Hunter Adams, another 197-pounder, also won multiple matches in Chattanooga.
App State finished with 41 team points, good for 17th in a field that includes wrestlers from 28 teams. Penn State led the way with 143.5 points.
The 2025-26 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station. The Mountaineers open their SoCon schedule Thursday at Presbyterian.
