Volleyball Falls to Coastal Carolina on Senior Day

BOONE, N.C. -- App State volleyball fell to Sun Belt East Division leader Coastal Carolina 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 30-28) on Friday evening in the Holmes Center.

Prior to the start of the match, the Mountaineers (1-6, 1-6 SBC) honored their Grace Morrison, Lexi Kohut, Emma Reilly and Kara Spicer for their dedication and commitment to the program.

McCall Denny paced the App State offense with nine kills, while adding five digs. Anna Kincaid and Morrison added six kills each and Victoria Wilform added five.

Reilly finished with 12 digs, with Sophie Cain chipping in with five. Sam Bickley and Cain each dished out 14 assists.

App State came out of the gate strong in the opening set, building a 5-1 lead. Following a Chanticleer (10-0, 10-0 SBC) point, the Mountaineers used a kill from Morrison and Kohut to take a 7-2 lead. Coastal Carolina came right back with a 9-2 spurt to build a 11-9 edge. App State tied the score at 15-15 on a block assist from Amya Giger and Kincaid and took the lead on an attack error. The Chanticleers took an 18-16 lead, before a Kincaid kill and Reilly service ace knotted the score at 18-18. From there, the Chanticleers scored seven of the next eight points to take the opening set 25-19.

Set 2 saw Coastal Carolina use a 9-0 run midway through the set to take a 15-5 edge, en route to a 25-8 set victory.

In the third set, App State scored three straight points early on to take a 7-5 lead. The Mountaineers held the lead until a quick 3-0 spurt for the Chanticleers allowed them to take a 13-12 lead. Coastal Carolina pushed its lead to 21-17, before App State used a 6-0 run to take a 23-21 advantage. The Mountaineers held a 24-22 lead, before Coastal Carolina roared back with three straight points to jump in front 25-24. The Black and Gold saved the match point with a kill and went on to save three more match points to tie the score at 28-28. From there, the Chanticleers used a kill and attack error to clinch the set and match.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the contest on ESPN+.
