BOONE, N.C. -- App State volleyball fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) to Sun Belt East Division leader Coastal Carolina in its home finale on Saturday.
Four players had at least four kills for the Mountaineers (1-7, 1-7 SBC).
Grace Morrison and
Kara Spicer each had five kills for App State, while
Anna Kincaid had four kills on a .364 hitting mark and
Amya Giger also had four kills on a .300 hitting percentage.
Sam Bickley posted a near double-double with 11 assists and nine digs.
Sophie Cain added nine assists and five digs.
Emma Reilly added double figure digs with 10 and
Lexi Kohut recorded seven digs.
Coastal Carolina (10-0, 10-0 SBC) opened the match with seven consecutive points to take an early lead. App State pulled within three, but the Chanticleers used an 8-0 run later in the set to take a 16-5 lead, en route to a 25-15 opening frame victory.
In Set 2, The Chanticleers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but App State chipped away and pulled within two at 10-8. Coastal Carolina came right back with the next four points, before the Black and Gold responded with four straight points of their own to trim the Chanticleer lead to 14-12. A kill from Kincaid pulled the Mountaineers within 21-17 late, but Coastal Carolina scored the final four points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.
In Set 3, App State used a quick 3-0 spurt, with kills from
Victoria Wilform and Kincaid, to open an 8-4 edge. The Chanticleers scored the next four points to tie the score at 8-8, only to see App State respond with two straight points to go back up 10-8. The Mountaineers pushed their lead to 15-10, before a 7-0 Coastal Carolina run gave them the lead. App State pulled within a point once more, but could get no closer, falling in the final set 25-20.
The Mountaineers will compete again next weekend at Troy. The two teams will meet on Nov. 6 at noon EST and 7 p.m. EST, followed by another contest on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. EST. All three contests will be broadcast on ESPN+.
