Men's Soccer to Host George Mason and American

BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State men's soccer team continues its homestand this weekend, taking on George Mason Friday at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers have a quick turnaround for the second straight weekend, hosting American Sunday at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out
 
The Mountaineers opened the 2019 season going 1-1, with a win over Loyola Maryland last Sunday. St. John's was able to take a 2-0 victory over the Apps in the squad's season opener Friday.
 
Newcomers Make the Difference
 
Sophomore Kelan Swales and freshman Nick Rogers were the goal scorers against Loyola Maryland, both of whom scored their first goals in an App State uniform. Redshirt freshman Jacob Madden made three key saves in the win, holding the Greyhound offense to just one goal.
 
Hunnicutt Helpers
 
Junior Reed Hunnicutt recorded his first assist since the 2017 season, finding Nick Rogers in the box for the game-winner against Loyola. The defender now has four assists so far in his App State career.
 
Scouting George Mason
 
The Patriots enter Friday's match 1-1, with a 2-1 victory over American, followed by a 1-0 loss to Navy. George Mason finished the 2018 campaign with a 9-8-0 overall record and posted a 5-3-0 mark against A-10 opponents, tying for third place in the conference during the regular season.  Senior Tunde Akinlosotu returns for the Patriots as the top goal scorer from a season ago, finding the back of the net five times. The forward was named A-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after scoring the game-winning goal against American.
 
Scouting American
 
The Eagles take on Campbell Friday before making the trip to High Country. American is currently 0-1-1, with a loss to George Mason and a 0-0 draw against George Washington. American was picked seventh in the Patriot League Preseason Poll after finishing 4-9-5 in 2018 and qualifying for the Patriot League Tournament. Senior Fabio Massaro returns for the Eagles after leading the team in goals (7) and points (14).

The Mountaineers are 1-1-1 against George Mason, with App State winning the last match-up 3-0 in 2018. This will be the first meeting between App State and American.

The Mountaineers wrap up five straight home games with a Saturday (9/14) contest against High Point. The Apps will go on the road to face Elon on Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
