BOONE, N.C. - App State women's soccer was clicking on all cylinders in a dominating 6-0 win over UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
The Mountaineers (1-2-1) registered their first victory of the season in an offensive outburst, tallying their most goals since the 2013 campaign when the Apps scored nine against the Citadel. It was a day of firsts for the Black and Gold, as six different athletes scored for Appalachian with five players scoring their first collegiate goal.
"To get a shutout, to get a win at home, have six different players score and every player get to play significant minutes is a huge," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "The biggest deal for us is the number of players contributed with different girls at every goal and every
assist. We're very proud of the way we played today."
App wasted no time in getting on the board when Jessica Easley drilled a set-piece into the box that bounced to Hulda Ágústsdóttir, who then found Tess Cairney for her first-career score. In the 34th minute, Mary Perkins fed Kyndall Edwards for her first goal in a Black and Gold uniform. Leading 2-0 in the 38th minute, Olivia Cohen tallied her first goal from an assist by Kristin Brown.
Appalachian went into the break with a convincing 3-0 lead but wasn't done there. Ava Dawson scored on a penalty goal in the 45th minute that pushed the lead to four goals. A third freshman in Hayley Boyles tacked on a score, while Gabby Cormier notched her first goal from Emma McGibany. McGibany and Augustdottir's assists gave the freshman their first points.
Kerry Eagleston got her first win in the net playing 70 minutes with two saves, while Alisa Oastswald saw her first minutes of action between the posts and totaled one save.
A season-high nine shots were on target with six of the attempts being scored on.
App State will look to keep the momentum going when it faces Charlotte at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Queen City.
