CHARLOTTE - App State women's soccer put forth a valiant effort, forcing overtime after a 2-0 deficit, but fell short to Charlotte by a score of 3-2 on Thursday evening at Transamerica Field.
Kristin Brown connected twice off two corners with
Ava Dawson, who scored both of her goals thanks to a pair of headers to tie up the contest. It gives the senior a team-high three goals and the third match of her career with multiple scores. Brown leads the team with three assists on the season.
After surrendering two first-half goals and attempting only three shots, the Apps (1-3-1) were on the attack with six of their nine attempts in the second period.
App cut into the deficit in the 52nd minute when the first corner found a running Dawson in the box for the header. Just eight minutes later, the Black and Gold tied things up when the second corner kick from Brown perfectly met Dawson.
However, Julia Grainda scored on a corner in the first seven seconds of overtime to give the 49ers (3-1) the victory.
The defense stepped up in the second half and overtime with
Kerry Eagleston recording five of her personal-high eights saves, including three stops in 14 seconds with less than five minutes left in regulation.
App couldn't get into a rhythm on offense with just three attempts in the first half. Charlotte's Jamie Fankhauser scored in the first minute of the contest to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The 49ers claimed a 2-0 edge in the 40th minute by Riley Orr.
Dawson led the team with three shots on goal, while
Jessica Easley posted two shots on frame.
Tess Cairney also tallied two attempts.
App State will look to even the weekend at 1-1 when it faces Tennessee Tech in Cookeville on Sunday at 2 p.m.
