BOONE, N.C. - App State's award-winning football video department added another two trophies to its collection by taking home first place in the "Best Highlight" category, as well as first place in the "Short Social" category at the annual SAVVY Awards presented by the Collegiate Sports Video Association.
The CSVA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to professional sports video, announced the winners of the 2019 SAVVY awards on May 15 at the 25th annual conference held in Anaheim, Calif. One award is given in each of the four categories that include the two previously mentioned as well as a "Recruiting" and a "Motivational" category. App State's football video crew, led by Director of Football Video Operations
George Claiborne, was nominated for all four awards. Winners for each category are selected by receiving the most votes from peer sports video members of the CSVA. In order to be considered for these awards, each video submitted must meet specific criteria.
The highlight video recognized by CSVA was the team motivational video produced before App State's season-opening showdown with Penn State entitled 'History Is Alive'. Recent App State graduate Emmitt Carden, who accepted a position as a creative director within NC State's recruiting department in March, was the primary editor of the video.
The Short Social category recognizes videos produced directly for social media and are under a minute in length. App State's winning contribution was the uniform reveal for the Sun Belt Championship Game entitled 'Let It Snow' and featured WRs
Thomas Hennigan and
Corey Sutton. App State freshman Max Renfro was the primary editor for this video.
While Carden and Renfro were the primary editors for the two award-winning videos, also assisting were Jade Riles and Hayden Chandler.
The video department won the Highlight category for the second straight year while it was the fifth time earning the prestigious honor. It was the first year in which the organization gave out a short social honor. App State had previously won a Motivational SAVVY in 2015 along with the Ultimate SAVVY as best overall in 2008, 2009 & 2014.
Also a finalist for a SVG College Sports Media award was the student-led broadcast for the Women's Basketball Invitational championship in which the Mountaineers defeated North Texas, 76-59. A crew of 11 students
were on hand for the game. It's the third time (2014,2018) has a been a finalist for the Collegiate Student category under Outstanding Live Game Production.
