Women's Tennis Showcases Resiliency in Win Over Georgia Southern

BOONE, N.C. - After a 4-3 loss against ULM last weekend, Appalachian State University women's tennis (12-5, 6-1 SBC) bounced back in a big way with a 4-1 victory over its archrival Georgia Southern (11-10, 3-4 SBC) on Friday evening at Deer Valley Racquet Club.

Appalachian is 5-0 this season after a loss while improving to 6-1 at home and surpassing last season's win total.

"We're very proud of the performance," head coach Blake Mosley said. "It was great to win after a tough loss at ULM. Georgia Southern came in a with a lot of energy, but we brought it from start to finish. It was a good outing for our team today."

The Mountaineers claimed the doubles point in thrilling fashion and later tallied three of four singles matches to seal the triumph.

Getting things started for the Black and Gold were Sandra Anglesjö and Teodora Sevo, improving to 9-3 after their convincing 6-0 win over Paula Boixader/Luisa Hrda on Court No. 2. Both matches on Courts 1 and 3 were back and forth. Jeannez Daniel and Rebecca Morse would clinch the 1-0 lead for App after edging Lindsay Truscott and C. Van Diemen, 7-5.

Morse/Daniel are on a six-match win streak en route to a 7-1 mark on the season. The two duos of Anglesjö/Sevo and Daniel/Morse are a combined 16-4 on the year.

Heidi Swope and María José Zacarias were battling on their court against Emilia Bujan/Arianne De Winter that went into a tiebreaker, but the match went unfinished, 6-6 (7-7).

After the Eagles tied up the match on Court No. 3, the Apps captured the next three singles matches. Sevo capped off her solid day with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against De Winter, cruising through the final two frames after suffering the first set loss. Kate Earnhardt was able to regroup after her counterpart forced a third set. The redshirt freshman downed Bujan in the final frame and collected the win, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Registering her fourth straight win and moving to 6-1 in conference play was Daniel, who finished her stellar day by topping Mila Hartig in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Appalachian State will aim for a third Sun Belt sweep and stay in the thick of the Sun Belt race for the top seed in the tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Georgia State. Match location is still to be determined.
