Tuthill Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

BOONE, N.C. — Responsible for the league's most complete and dominant mound performance of the season, Appalachian State freshman Tyler Tuthill was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.

In throwing the only nine-inning shutout by a Sun Belt pitcher this season, Tuthill faced only four batters over the minimum during a 6-0 win Saturday against UTA, which was leading the league prior to App State's weekend sweep.

The left-handed Tuthill allowed four hits, struck out a career-high eight batters and issued no walks in his 94-pitch complete game. The two hits he allowed in the first six innings occurred on a misplayed popup and a slow roller between the mound and first, and he was still sharp enough to strike out the side in the eighth inning.

In addition to the league's pitching honor, which is sponsored by Community Coffee, Tuthill was also named the Sun Belt's overall Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. He was also recognized as a "Who's Up" entry by D1Baseball.com.

He is one of five Division I freshmen with a nine-inning shutout this year, and his four-hitter tied Central Arkansas' Noah Cameron and LIU Brooklyn's Nick Torres for the lowest number of hits allowed in that group. He also pitched App State's first complete-game shutout since Taylor Thurber's four-hitter produced the program's first-ever Sun Belt win in 2015.

Tuthill is the second App State freshman to receive a weekly honor from the Sun Belt, as second baseman Luke Drumheller was named its Player of the Week following a weekend in which he tied the NCAA's single-game record of five doubles.

Drumheller leads the Sun Belt with a .373 batting average, and Tuthill's 3.00 ERA ranks third in the league. His six wins are tied for first in the conference and fourth among Division 1 freshmen, and he is No. 2 in the league by allowing opponents to bat just .197 against him.
