Mountaineers Look to Bounce Back Against Georgia Southern on Saturday

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State closes out its three-game home stand on Saturday against Georgia Southern. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Appalachian Sports Network from IMG Learfield College.

THE SERIES
  • This will be the 50th meeting between the two schools, with App State leading 26-23.
  • The Eagles have won six of the last seven contests against the Mountaineers, including a 60-59 triumph in Boone last season.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Mountaineers dropped a 80-75 contest to Georgia State on Thursday.
  • Justin Forrest paced App State with 17 points, three rebounds and three assists...Isaac Johnson tallied his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds...Tyrell Johnson had 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals off the bench, while Ronshad Shabazz tallied 11 points and five rebounds.
  • Georgia State opened a 17-point first half lead only to see the Mountaineers use a 21-4 run to tie the score...App State took the lead in the second half at 58-57 on a three-pointer from Michael Bibby...Georgia State took the lead back at 66-61, but the Mountaineers battled back to tie the score at 75-75 with 1:49 on a jumper from Tyrell Johnson...Both teams would come up empty on their next possession...Following a Georgia State timeout, Kane Williams scored on a layup and was fouled on the play by Isaac Johnson...He sank the ensuing free throw to put the Panthers up 78-75 with 42 seconds left...On App State's next possession, the Mountaineers were whistled for a travel and were forced to foul Williams...He missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Black and Gold grabbed the rebound...Ronshad Shabazz had a look at a game-tying three, but it was blocked by the Panthers...Georgia State gained possession and Jordan Tyson sunk a pair of free throws in the final seconds to put the game away.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • The Black and Gold stand at 9-17 on the season and 4-9 in Sun Belt play.
  • With his third block in the game on Thursday, Tyrell Johnson moved into fifth place in program history in career blocks with 119.
  • After his 10-rebound performance on Thursday, Isaac Johnson has recorded double digit rebounds in 10 games this season and leads the Sun Belt in rebounding at 8.7 rpg.
  • Tyrell Johnson has reached double figures in scoring in his last six games, which is the longest stretch of his career...During that span, he is averaging 13.0 points on 55.4 percent (31-of-56) shooting and 4.5 rebounds.
  • After shooting 50.0 percent from the field on Saturday, the Mountaineers have now shot 50.0 or better in back-to-back games for the second time this season...The Black and Gold have drained at least 50.0 percent of its field goal attempts in eight games this season
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
  • Georgia Southern saw five players score in double figures in a 79-74 win at Coastal Carolina on Thursday, improving to 17-10 and 9-45 in conference play.
  • Tookie Brown paced the Eagles with 17 points, while Montae Glenn had 16 points and Quan Jackson finished with 15 points...Off the bench, Simeon Carter tallied 13 points and David-Lee Jones Jr. had 12 points.
  • Brown is averaging a team-high 17.4 ppg and is averaging 5.0 assists per game, which ranks second the league.
  • As a team, Georgia Southern leads the Sun Belt in scoring average (83.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (.499).
  • The Eagles appeared in the receiving votes section of the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
