GREENSBORO, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (3-1) came from behind to edge UNCG (1-3) in an exciting 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro.
Capturing their first road win of the season in the road opener, the Apps needed to win their final three singles matches to earn their third straight victory.
Trailing 3-1,
Kate Earnhardt started the rally at the No. 2 spot when she won her second consecutive three-set affair. The redshirt-freshman downed Erika Barquero 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to bring App to within one point.
It was up to the App mainstays in
Heidi Swope and
Rebecca Morse. The senior pair won the final two matches to help App pull out the victory. Swope tied up contest following a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Tayah Cross to improve to 4-0 in singles on the season. Morse clinched the win against Eugenia Camacho in a tightly-contested 7-6, 6-4 win.
App State also needed to come back in the doubles portion. Nancy Bridges/Brianna Gomez downed Swope and María José Zacarias, 6-0, on Court No. 1.
Sandra Anglesjö and
Teodora Sevo knotted things up when the duo convincingly won 6-0 over Erika Barquero/Emily Ory. Netting the clinching point was Earnhardt and Morse in what was the beginning of an excellent day for the partners. They dealt Sophia Adams/Tayah Cross a 6-2 loss to give App the 1-0 lead.
UNCG won the first three singles matches, but two of the contests went a full three sets.
Jeannez Daniel fell to Gomez in a valiant effort, as she fought back from a one-set deficit to force the third stanza. Zacarias also battled back, forcing a deciding third frame before suffering the defeat to Adams. Sevo suffered a close 7-5, 6-4 decision to Bridges.
App State will now face No. 2 North Carolina on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
