Last Time Out
App State posted its 10
th win on the season Tuesday night, taking down North Carolina, 1-0, in Chapel Hill thanks to
Alex Hernandez's goal on a penalty kick in the 72
nd minute.
The App State defense took over from there, shutting down the North Carolina offense for its seventh shutout on the year. Mountaineer goalkeeper
Jacob Madden made one save on the night and moves to 10-4-1. North Carolina ended the night with 10 shots, compared to five shots from Appalachian.
Historic Win Over UNC
This was the Mountaineers first win over the Tar Heels since 1980. This was also the first win over a Power Five program since a 2-1 victory at Virginia Tech in 2008. By reaching double-figure wins, App State has now matched its highest win total since 2015.
Hernandez In Form
The goal by
Alex Hernandez was his 4th of the season and puts him even with
Kelan Swales and
Camden Holbrook for the team-lead in scoring. Hernandez now has seven points in his last five games.
Sun Belt Standings
App State currently sits at the top of the Sun Belt standings with a 2-1-0 record, along with Central Arkansas and Howard. The Mountaineers also have the best overall record at 10-4-1. Goalkeeper
Jacob Madden currently leads the league in goals against average with a 1.078, allowing just 16 goals in 1,335 minutes.
National Rankings
Madden's seven shutouts are good for 11
th nationally, and the team's shutout percentage of .467 sits at 27
th. The Mountaineers save percentage of .765 also ranks 48
th nationally. Offensively,
Camden Holbrook's three game-winning goals ranks 34
th in the NCAA.
Scouting Georgia Southern
The Eagles enter Saturday's match with a record of 6-7-2, coming off a 3-0 loss at Howard last Sunday. Sophomore Adam Davie is leading the team in goals (7) and assists (4). Goalkeeper Jose Eduardo Bomfim has started nine of the Eagles games this season, posting a save percentage of .736, but has failed to keep a shutout this year.
