KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Appalachian State men's soccer team was recognized by United Soccer Coaches for its academic performance, the organization announced Thursday. The Mountaineers received the team academic award for the third time under head coach
Jason O'Keefe, and 13
th time since 2002.
College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster for the 2018-19 academic year.
"We are extremely proud of our guys and the effort they put into their academics. Their priorities are always correct and that is why we have been able to receive this tremendous honor so many times," head coach
Jason O'Keefe said. "It is the top honor a student-athlete can get and show they not only compete at the highest level on the field, but also in the classroom which is a team goal of ours every year."
A total of 992 college teams (345 men, 647 women) earned the Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 academic year. You can find the full list of teams
here. Recently, men's soccer placed seven student-athletes on the Sun Belt Commissioner's List and 10 on the Sun Belt Honor Roll. The Commissioner's List honors student-athletes who maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better during the 2018-19 academic year and the Academic Honor Roll honors those student-athletes who maintained a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 for the academic year.
App State was recently ranked 6th in the Southeast region by United Soccer Coaches, ahead of Sun Belt opponents Georgia State (7th) Central Arkansas (10th). This is the fourth straight week the Mountaineer have been ranked top 10 in the Southeast region.
