Men's Soccer Travels to Chapel Hill to take on No. 21 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Appalachian State men's soccer team looks to get back in the win column Tuesday, taking on No. 21 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The match is set for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out
 
The Appalachian State men's soccer team took a 4-0 loss to No. 19 Penn State Friday night. The Mountaineers fall to 9-4-1 on the season.
 
The Nittany Lions used a goal in the first half and three in the second to take the win, scoring in the 34th and 63rd and 68th and 89th minute. Mayola Kinyua led the Mountaineers in shots with two, Myson DardenKelan Swales and Austin Hill also added a shot. Kinyua had the Apps' best chance in the first half, but missed just over the cross bar. Swales had a solid attempt in the second half that was blocked by a Penn State defender. In goal, redshirt freshman Jacob Madden made four saves on the night for App State. 
 
Offensive Numbers
 
Camden Holbrook and Kelan Swales are tied for the team-lead in goals with four apiece. Alex Hernandez now has three goals and an assist for seven total points to put him behind Swales and Holbrook's tally of 10. Juan Hernandez has a career and team-high four assists, followed by Alex McGrath and Parker Cross with three.
 
Sun Belt Standings
 
App State currently sits at the top of the Sun Belt standings with a 2-1-0 record, along with Central Arkansas and Howard. The Mountaineers are currently leading the conference in goals allowed with just 16 in 14 games. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jacob Madden currently sits at second in the conference with a 1.156 goals against average.
 
United Soccer Coaches Ranking
 
The Mountaineers were recently ranked eighth in the Southeast region by United Soccer Coaches. This is the seventh straight week the Mountaineers have been ranked in the top 10 of the region.
 
Scouting North Carolina
 
The Tar Heels enter Tuesday's match 7-5-3, falling to Louisville, 1-0, on Friday. The Carolina offense is led by Alex Rose with seven goals and two assists, for 16 total points. Jelani Pieters also adds four goals and five assists, while Mauricio Pineda has tallied five goals and two assists. In goal, Alec Smir has a 1.09 goals against average with 32 saves.
 
Series History
 
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series between the two sides with a record of 14-3-2. The last time the two teams met was in 2001, where the Mountaineers fell at UNC, 3-0.
