FARMVILLE, Va. – Appalachian State University field hockey suffered a 2-1 defeat in overtime at Longwood on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (8-5, 1-3 MAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second quarter before Longwood (6-5, 2-1 MAC) tied the game midway through the third period. Junior
Veerle Van Heertum drilled her fifth goal of the season to power App State to its 1-0 lead. Sophomore

Chloe Bell laid off the pass so Van Heertum could drive into the back of the goal cage.
Appalachian set the tone early, outshooting the Lancers 6-1 in the first period. Junior
Meghan Smart accounted for all six shots and four shots on goal for the Mountaineers in the first 15 minutes. App State maintained its pressure into the second quarter, scoring the opening goal after earning its second penalty corner.
Longwood knotted the game at 1-1 in the 39
th minute with a goal from Karly Harwood. After five combined shots in the fourth quarter, App State entered its second overtime game of the season. Freshman
Allison Corey fired a shot on target from the top of the circle, but LWU goalkeeper Katie Wyman made her sixth save to keep the Mountaineers from notching the golden goal. Sophomore
Anna Smarrelli followed Corey's attempt with a shot wide of the cage.
The Lancers then clinched the victory in Saturday's Mid-American Conference matchup in the 66
th minute. Sophia Loscher recorded the goal after the Lancers earned a penalty corner.
App State outshoot Longwood 13-11, owning an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half. Smart paced the Mountaineers with seven shots and four shots on target.
The Mountaineers return home to Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field with a game against Saint Louis on Oct. 20. The game is set to begin at noon.
