Gunter Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Junior Brady Gunter was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This marks the defender's first career Sun Belt Player of the Week honor, and the Mountaineers' third defensive honor this season.

"We are very excited for Brady to be recognized for his efforts and production," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "He has done so many great things for us over the last two and a half years and has not gotten much credit outside our locker room. I am sure he will continue to grow with this recognition."

Gunter made an impact in App State's 1-0 win over UNC Asheville last Wednesday, playing all 90 minutes in the Mountaineers' fourth shutout of the season. The Kernersville, N.C. native has started every game in the backline for the Black & Gold this season and played all but 16 minutes over eight games.

The Appalachian State defense currently leads the Sun Belt in goals allowed (6) and goals against average (.75). The Apps' four shutouts also lead the conference, doubling the next best team. Coastal Carolina and Georgia State have each recorded two shutouts.

App State was recently ranked 6th in the Southeast region by United Soccer Coaches, ahead of Sun Belt opponents Georgia State (7th) Central Arkansas (10th). The 6-2-0 Mountaineers are back in action tonight, hosting East Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
