BOONE, N.C. — After putting five wrestlers in bracket finals, Appalachian State capped the Appalachian Open in Varsity Gym with a title from
Irvin Enriquez at 141 pounds.
The final at 149 pounds on Saturday was scheduled to have a pair of Mountaineers in
Matt Zovistoski and
Jonathan Millner but wasn't contested.
Codi Russell reached a final before finishing as the runner-up at 133 pounds, and
Paul Carson advanced to the final at 197 pounds before finishing as the runner-up. They both went 3-1 in the tournament.
Enriquez won a 7-0 decision against NC State's Kellen Devlin in the 141 final. Enriquez's 4-0 day included a 16-8 decision against Chattanooga's Colton Landers, a 5-1 decision against NC State's Matt Fields and a 17-10 decision against North Carolina's Nicholas Lirette.
Carl Guess took third at 165 pounds thanks to an 11-8 decision against Campbell's Mike Ferree in the third-place match.
Thomas Flitz (174) and
Will Formato (157) placed fourth in their weight classes.
Joe Accousti (174) and
Demazio Samuel (197) won fifth-place matches.
Zovistoski went 4-0 on the day to reach the championship round, while Millner was 3-0 after receiving a first-round bye.
