Mountaineers Look to Bounce Back on Saturday Against Texas State

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State men's basketball hosts Texas State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a Sun Belt matchup. The game can be seen on AppVision.

THE SERIES
  • This will be the 10th all-time meeting between the two teams, with App State holding a 5-4 edge.
  • The Mountaineers swept the season series last year, winning 66-62 in Boone and 59-56 in San Marcos.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Mountaineers dropped an 82-72 decision to UT Arlington on Saturday.
  • Ronshad Shabazz tallied 16 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Isaac Johnson had 16 points, including a career-high tying nine made free throws, and seven rebounds.
  • Off the bench, O'Showen Williams tied his season-high with 13 points and Tyrell Johnson finished with 12 points and a season-high eight rebounds.
  • The Black and Gold bench held a 33-19 edge in scoring over the Mavericks. The 33 points marks the fourth time App State's bench has score 30 or more points in a game this season.
  • The first half was tight throughout and featured eight ties and nine lead changes. With the score tied at 24-24, App State scored the next four points to take a 28-24 edge. The two teams traded buckets on each of their next two possessions and the Mountaineers took a 32-28 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the Mavericks (5-11, 1-2 SBC) scored the first 11 points to jump in front 37-32. UTA pushed its lead to 52-42 with 9:50 remaining and opened as large of a lead of 14 points at 69-55 with 3:43 to play. The Black and Gold trimmed the deficit to seven points in the final two minutes, but could get no closer.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • The Mountaineers enter play at 5-11 on the season and 0-3 in Sun Belt competition.
  • App State has scored 70 or more points in 14 of 16 games this season and ranks third in the conference in team scoring, averaging 81.9 points.
  • In Thursday's contest, Ronshad Shabazz moved into second place on the all-time scoring list. He now has 1,798 career points and trails just Donald Sims, who scored 2,185 points in his career.
  • With another seven-rebound performance, Isaac Johnson had pulled down seven or more rebounds in 12 games this season. He currently sits second in the league in rebounding at 8.6 rebounds per game.
  • Tyrell Johnson's three blocks on Thursday bring his season total to 15. He also took over sole possession of sixth place in career blocks and has 108 in his career.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
  • Texas State improved to 13-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Sun Belt with a 65-61 win at Coastal Carolina on Thursday.
  • Alex Peacock tallied a team-high 13 points, while Nijal Pearson had 12 points and six rebounds. Alonzo Sule added six points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Bobcats.
  • Pearson leads Texas State in scoring, averaging 17.8 points. Tre'Larenz Nottingham is also averaging double figures for the Bobcats at 12.9 points. 
  • The Bobcats feature the top defense in the Sun Belt ranking first in opponent points per game (61.3) and field goal defense (.383) and second in three-point defense (.286).
  • Texas State was ranked No. 24 in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll.
