Summerlin Tops Leaderboard at Carolinas Open

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hot off his second-place tie in the 62nd Eastern Amateur a few weeks ago, Appalachian State rising junior Tripp Summerlin is back at the top of the leaderboard in this week's 94th Carolinas Open.

Summerlin currently sits atop the leaderboard of 58 golfers that made the cut, at 8-under. This was helped by a second-round 6-under 65, the best score to par on day two. Summerlin has been on cruise control since the 13th hole in his first round, avoiding a single bogey since, good for the longest streak in the tournament. He closed Wednesday's second round with an eagle.

The Carolinas Open is the oldest professional golf tournament in the Carolinas. Since its inception in 1923 when the Carolinas PGA Section was founded in Greensboro, many of the best players from the area have competed. Past winners include Henry Picard, Bobby Locke, Johnny Palmer, Kelly Mitchum and last year's winner, Appalachian alum Josh Nichols. The three-round event is taking place at Starmount Forest CC this week.

Summerlin tees off in his final round at 8:51 a.m. Thursday on hole one alongside fellow amateur Gray Matthews and PGA Pro and Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas.

If Summerlin were to grab a victory, he would be just the 11th amateur to win the event since its creation and just the third amateur since 1984. If an amateur wins, he receives points towards the CPGA Bob Boyd Section Player of the Year.

Another notable in this week's tournament is Appalachian rising senior Alex Burris, who shot a first-round 72 followed by a second-round 70, good for even par in the tournament and a tie for 33rd place entering Thursday's final round.
