Women's Soccer Begins Six-Match Homestand

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's soccer (1-2-1) begins a string of six consecutive home matches on Friday against South Carolina State (0-3) on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Gardner-Webb (2-2) on Sunday at 5 p.m.

About the Mountaineers
App is coming off a 0-1-1 weekend, falling to Maryland on Friday, 3-1, and concluding to a 0-0 draw against Old Dominion. Sarah Murphy scored her first-career goal against the Terrapins, which gave App a 1-0 advantage, but the hosts scored three straight goals to capture the win. Lauren Burke's first start of the season turned out to be a stellar one, as she played all 110 minutes and posted her first-career clean sheet to help preserve a 0-0 tie against a Monarch squad that came into the contest ranked 14th in the nation with eight goals. 

Home Sweet Home
App is 1-0 thus far at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex after a 3-0 win over Campbell in the home opener on Sunday, Aug. 19. Only two other times in 2001 and 1995 have the Black and Gold played at least six home matches in a row. 

Burke Earns Sun Belt Honor
For the first time in her career, Burke was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after her performance against the Monarchs, who were shutout at home for the first time since 2016. The Mableton, Ga.,native has played in 155 minutes this season with zero goals allowed and seven stops. She leads the Sun Belt in goals against average and save percentage. 

Scouting South Carolina State
The Bulldogs are off to a 0-4 start after falling to The Citadel yesterday in their home opener. SCSU has been outscored 13-3 in those contests. Scoring for South Carolina State are Jamey Thomas, Justine Zepeda and Kaitlyn Lauzeire. 

Scouting Gardner-Webb 
GWU is 2-2 and will face Navy on Friday before the Mountaineers. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 2-2 after a 3-0 shutout over a familiar foe in Georgia Southern on Sunday.  Both of GWU's wins are at home, while it fell to UNCG it the lone road contest. Jada Newton leads Sunday's opponent with three goals, while Ty Snell has two scores. Keely Brown has been the primary goalkeeper for GWU, starting in all four matches and playing 352 minutes. She has one shutout with 28 saves and a 1.28 goals against average. 

Series History
South Carolina State
Appalachian is a dominating 8-0 all-time against SCSU with the last matchup coming in 2007. The Mountaineers claimed a victory in that matchup, 1-0. App State has outscored SCSU a combined 48-2 in those matchups, averaging six goals per game. The Black and Gold has scored at least 11 goals on the Bulldogs twice. 

Gardner-Webb
The series is tied at 3-3-1 between the Apps and Runnin' Bulldogs. App State captured a 2-1 victory in 2016 on the road. Appalachian is 2-0-1 against GWU at home without allowing a goal in the series at Ted Mack. 

What's Next
App State will play its third consecutive home match on Thursday against North Florida at 7 p.m.
