LELAND, N.C. – Led by sophomore
Tripp Summerlin's runner-up individual finish, the Appalachian State men's golf team placed fourth out of 13 teams at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate, held Sunday-Monday at the Cape Fear National course.
Summerlin, a native of Summerfield, N.C., used an opening-round 68 (4 under par) to take an early lead in the tournament. He finished at 2 under with a three-round score of 214 (68-72-74), and if not for a bogey on the 17th hole Monday, he may have captured individual medalist honors. VCU's Sachin Kumar won the tournament by one shot over Summerlin at 3 under (213).
App State shot 898 (285-308-205) as a team to finish fourth. UT Arlington (858) claimed the team title, followed by Jacksonville State (888) and South Carolina Beaufort (891).
"We're encouraged that we're starting to show a little progress, but we've still got a way to go," App State head coach
Bo Redman said. "Tripp led the way for us, and we had two freshmen play well this week. I feel like the team is trending in the right direction. We're looking forward to our next tournament in a couple weeks and to keep building on some momentum."
Freshman
Candler Rice tied for fifth place overall with a 1-over 217 (71-73-73), while freshman
Jack Brea was just outside the top 20 in a tie for 21st at 9-over 225 (72-73-80).
The next tournament for the Mountaineers is the March 25-27 Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va., hosted by William & Mary.
