PHILADELPHIA — Highlighted by a runner-up finish from
Alan Clothier, Appalachian State had seven wrestlers reached the semifinal round and 10 wrestlers earn a top-six place at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.
The Mountaineers totaled 100 points, fourth-best in a field led by Penn State.
Clothier's 3-0 start included a 2-0 decision against Harvard's Clifton Wang in the 184-pound semifinal, and Penn State's Shakur Rasheed won the final.
Randall Diabe (197) and
Irvin Enriquez (141) had third-place showings, as Diabe earned a dramatic 5-2 decision thanks to an escape and takedown in the tiebreaker 2 period with Rider's Ethan Laird. They ended the third period with the score tied at 1-1.
Enriquez won his third-place match against teammate
Anthony Brito, who joined
Cary Miller (heavyweight) and
Andy Richard (125) in finishing fourth. Miller trailed only 4-3 entering the third period against second-ranked Nick Nevills of Penn State.
The fifth-place finishes came from
Matt Zovistoski (157) and
Michael Elliott (165), while
De'Andre Swinson-Barr (125) took sixth after winning his first two matches but missing the rest of the day.
Jonathan Millner (149) also placed sixth.
App State also had wrestlers, mostly in an unattached capacity, compete at the Wolfpack Wrestling Club Open in Raleigh. The highlights were fifth-place finishes from
Paul Carson (197) and
Will Formato (157).
