App State to Face No. 23 Purdue in First Round of Charleston Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C, -- Appalachian State men's basketball will take on No. 23 Purdue in the First Round of the Charleston Classic at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

  • This will be the second all-time meeting between the two schools
  • Purdue won the lone meeting between the two schools 79-65 in West Lafayette during the 2000-01 season
LAST TIME OUT
  • Appalachian State fell at Alabama 81-73 in a non-bracket contest of the Charleston Classic on Sunday evening
  • Isaac Johnson posted his first double-double of the season and fifth of his career with a career-high 22 points and season-best 13 rebounds. He went 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the field and also had a block
  • Ronshad Shabazz tallied 21 points, going 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from deep. Justin Forrest added 14 points
  • In all, the Black and Gold shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) on three-pointers
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • App State stands at 1-1 on the season
  • The Mountaineers rank third in the nation in three-point percentage, shooting 53.5 percent from beyond the arc in their first two contests
  • After his 21-point performance on Sunday, Ronshad Shabazz became just the 10th player in program history to score 1,500 career points. In the win, he also moved into ninth place on the all-time scoring list, passing Charles Payton (1,494) for 10th and Stan Davis (1,509) for ninth
  • Justin Forrest is averaging a team-high 18.5 points, which ranks sixth in the Sun Belt. He has also knocked down 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) three-pointers
  • Shabazz is averaging 16.5 points, which is 10th in the Sun Belt. On the season, Shabazz is shooting 6-of-10 (60.0 percent) from beyond the arc
  • Isaac Johnson is also averaging double figures in scoring at 15.0 points. He is also tops on the team in rebounding, averaging 9.0 rebounds. Of his 18 rebounds this season, five have come on the offensive glass
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
  • Purdue, who is ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 22 in the Preseason USA Today Coaches Poll, enters play with a perfect 2-0 mark after posting and 84-75 win over Ball State on Saturday
  • Carsen Edwards was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, after averaging 26.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in Purdue's first two games
  • Matt Haarms (12.5), Evan Boudreaux (12.0) and Ryan Cline (11.0) are all averaging double figures in the scoring department 
  • Grady Eifert (7.0) leads the team in rebounding, while Cline paces the squad in assists with 13
NEXT UP
Appalachian State will play at either 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. on Friday against Wichita State or Davidson on ESPNU. The Black and Gold will close out play in the tournament on Sunday against at a time and against an opponent that has yet to be determined.
