App State Wrestlers Fare Well in New York, Pembroke

Appalachian State wrestlers competed at the Journeyman MyHouse Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y., and the Pembroke Classic in Pembroke, N.C., on Sunday.
 
Among App State's attached competitors, Anthony Brito (141 pounds) led the way by going 4-0 in his round-robin pool in New York. He had a 7-2 decision against Bloomsburg's Tim Kane, a 4-3 decision against West Virginia's Lukas Martin, a 7-3 decision against Hofstra's Garrett Lambert and a technical fall against The Citadel's Ethan Phillips.
 
In Pembroke, unattached wrestlers Paul Carson (197 pounds) and Will Formato (157) won titles by going 4-0. Carson had a 16-4 major decision, a 12-3 major decision and a technical fall (17-1) before he recorded a pin at the 2:19 mark of the championship match against Brandon Skinner.
 
Formato posted a win by technical fall (18-0), a 5-4 decision and a 2-0 decision before using a takedown in the sudden victory overtime period to claim a 6-4 decision against Tyler Makosy in the championship round.
 
Riley Smucker (unattached freshman) was the runner-up at 165 pounds, while there was a trio of fourth-place finishes from unattached freshmen Barrett Blakely (174 pounds), Mason Fiscella (197 pounds) and Michael Burchell (heavyweight). Christian Beach (attached at 157 pounds) and Zack Willard (attached at 197 pounds) both went 3-2 and won fifth-place matches.
 
Back in New York, Michael Elliott was 3-1 in his pool at 165 pounds, while Jonathan Millner (149 pounds), Thomas Flitz (174 pounds) and Joe Accousti (165 pounds) all went 2-1.
