GREENSBORO, N.C. - Appalachian State started its 2018-19 women's golf season in earnest this week with a tie for fifth place at the Starmount Fall Classic, hosted by UNC Greensboro.
The three-round tournament, held Monday and Tuesday at Starmount Forest Country Club, was the first multi-round event of the year for the Mountaineers, who finished with team rounds of 305-296-304 for a three-day total of 905 (+41). The Mountaineers finished in a tie for fifth with UAB, behind Tennessee, UNC Greensboro, High Point and Troy.
"Being our first big tournament of the fall, it was great to be competitive and in the mix," head coach Heather Brown said. "We would have loved to find a shot or two out there to get into a tie for third."
Senior Joliana Elias led the way for App, finishing in a tie for fourth place at 3-over-par. Her rounds of 75, 71 and 73 gave her a total score of 219 that was bettered only by Tennessee's Malia Stovall (-5), UNCG's Tara Bettle (+1) and Troy's Nicole Lorup (+2).
Other Mountaineers to finish in the top 30 individually were Patricia Thompson (T-21st, +12), Mogie Adamchik (T-21st, +12) and Melany Chong (T-28th, +14).
"We struggled with our putters today but managed to buckle down and keep it close on our closing holes," Brown added. "Yesterday, we surpassed our goal of 298 in the second round, and we ranked third in overall pars and first on par 3s, so we're taking away a bunch of positives heading into our next event."
App State will be back on the course for the Oct. 14-15 Brown Bear Fall Invitational in Seekonk, Mass.
