BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's soccer (7-6-1, 4-2-0 SBC) fell to Georgia State (5-9-1, 3-4 SBC) in a 2-0 setback on Friday evening at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
For the first time this season, the Black and Gold lost a game when recording at least eight shots on goal, as the Mountaineers posted nine shots on target.
The Apps held a 14-9 edge in shot attempts and 9-6 in SOG, but App State couldn't convert the shots on goal into scores.
Maggie Hanusek led the team with three strikes on target, which all came in the first half. Two minutes after she attempted her third shot of the half, the Panthers scored off a scrum inside the box that gave them a 1-0 lead.
Taylor Ray made one of her four saves just before the end of the half to keep the deficit at 1-0.
App State continued the attack early in the second stanza with three more shots on goal by
Molly Niewald,
Tess Cairney and
Blair Anderes in a 10-minute span.
Georgia State would tack on its second goal off an unlucky deflection off an App defender inside the box to push the lead to 2-0.
Appalachian would have more opportunities late in the period, but Madi Card made all three saves to keep the App offense at bay.
The Mountaineers look to bounce back on Sunday against South Alabama at 1 p.m. at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
