CENTERVILLE, Va. - Led by individual tournament champion
Tripp Summerlin, the App State men's golf team secured an early-season tournament victory at the Patriot Intercollegiate, which wrapped up its third and final round Tuesday afternoon.
App State finished first out of 16 teams, including host George Mason University, by carding a three-round 873 (292, 291, 290) over the two-day event. After the first round, the Mountaineers found themselves in third place and climbed into a tie for second following Monday's second round. First-year head coach
Bo Redman's squad lowered its total to 290 for Tuesday's final round, finishing 9-over-par as a team and ahead of Florida Gulf Coast, Delaware, Georgetown and the rest of the field.
This marks the Mountaineers' first team tournament victory since claiming first at the Cleveland State Invitational on Sept. 29, 2014.
It was a sensational two days for Summerlin, a sophomore from Summerfield, North Carolina, who spurred his team to victory. Summerlin claimed the top individual medal by finished 7-under with a three-round score of 209 (67-72-70). He finished atop the leaderboard out of a field of 95 golfers.
Summerlin collected a tourney-high 14 birdies, including five during his first-round 67 in which he also eagled the par-4 second hole. He won the tourney Tuesday by carding a 2-under 70 that included four birdies and just two boagies.
Alex Burris finished 17th overall with a 4-over 220 (79-70-71), followed by teammates
Chance Watson (T-28th, 77-76-71),
Logan McNeely (T-33rd, 69-78-78) and
Jack Brea (T-60th, 80-73-79).
App State continues its fall season with a trip to Cleveland, Ohio, next week for the Oct. 1-3 Cleveland State Invitational.
