BOONE, N.C. – In the inaugural Mid-American Conference match at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field, Appalachian State University field hockey dropped a 3-0 decision to Kent State on Friday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (2-5) were kept to just six shots with three shots on goal during the match. Senior midfielder
Taylor Cimbalist recorded two shots on goal, both in the second half, while freshman midfielder
Abby Merrill recorded the only App State shot on goal of the first half.
Neither side was able to score in the first half due to physical defense by both teams. App State had its best scoring opportunity in the 31st minute when
Veerle Van Heertum had a shot go wide of the goal following a penalty corner.
Kent State (3-5) came out of the half and put a lot of pressure on the Appalachian defense and had two penalty corners in the first three minutes. The Golden Flashes connected for their first goal of the match on the second penalty corner in the 38th minute.
Over the next 15 minutes of play, Kent State got six penalty corners, but
Rachel Gaines made five saves to keep the score at 1-0. In the 61st and 63rd minute, the Golden Flashes scored two more goals to take a 3-0 lead forcing App State to take a timeout.
Cimbalist recorded her two shots on goal in the final five minutes of play, by Kent State goalkeeper Kylie LeBlanc deflected away those shots for the victory.
Appalachian returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, to face another MAC foe in Miami (Ohio). That game is set for a noon start at Adcock Field.
