BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey (2-6, 0-2 MAC) fell 6-2 to Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field.
Taylor Cimbalist netted her fourth goal of the season and
Meghan Smart scored her first-career goal.
Miami (4-4, 2-0 MAC) came out hot, scoring just four minutes into the game. Kirstin McNeil received the ball from Leonor Berlie following a penalty corner for her second goal of the season. The RedHawks would score again after a penalty corner in the 15th minute when Berlie found Lexi Silver for the score.
The Mountaineers responded with a goal of their own in the 26th minute. Smart received a pass from Cimbalist as she was dashing towards the net to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Off another penalty corner, Miami's leading scorer, Paula Portugal, scored her sixth goal of the season with just five minutes remaining to go up 3-1 into halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, Cimbalist brought the deficit back down to one. Following a penalty corner,
Rebecca McLean sent the ball to Cimbalist who was near the left post. She sent the ball just over the outstretched gloves of Miami's goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the year.
The score remained 3-2 over the next 14 minutes until Miami scored its fourth goal off another penalty corner. The RedHawks would score two more in the final three minutes of the game to seal the match, 6-2.
Appalachian was outshot on the day, 15-5, and earned five penalty corners to Miami's 13.Â
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they host the Ohio Bobcats for another MAC matchup at 6 p.m.
