CONWAY, S.C. – Appalachian State University baseball went toe-to-toe with No. 24 Coastal Carolina, blasting two home runs and tossing five scoreless innings. Four runs in the seventh inning, however, would end up being the difference in a tough 6-2 loss on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (19-36, 8-22 Sun Belt) combined for six hits on the day, allowing just three more to the Chanticleers (37-18-1, 22-7-1 Sun Belt) in the season finale.
From the hill,
Luke Watts got the start and had a fine outing, going 4.2 innings with just four hits and two runs allowed while striking out two.
Matt Brill went 1.1 innings in relief and punched out two batters while not allowing a hit or run.
Tristan Helms and
Reed Howell covered the next inning before
Dallas DeVrieze closed. DeVrieze's final inning of work as a Mountaineer was clean, not allowing a hit, run or a walk and striking out one.
From the plate, two Diamond Apps were able to launch home runs to keep things close.
Matt Vernon started things off in the third inning by giving Appalachian its first lead of the weekend with a solo rocket passed the left field wall. The homer gives him eight for the season and 16 for his career at App State.
The designated hitter on the day,
Dylan Hamel, then came up to bat in the top of the eighth inning and launched a no-doubt jack over the left field wall as well to give him his first home run of his career.
