BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University baseball will finish up its regular season slate with a tournament berth on the line as it heads to Sun Belt Conference newcomer and defending National Champion No. 24 Coastal Carolina for a three-game series.
The series will begin on Thursday, May 19 at 2 p.m. before Games Two and Three take place on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Mountaineers (19-33, 8-19 Sun Belt) are right on the cusp of making its first Sun Belt postseason tournament, but will most likely need to take at least a game from the 24th-ranked Chanticleers (34-18-1, 19-7-1 Sun Belt) as they battle for the 10th seed with Georgia State.
RHP Matt Schaeffer will get the nod on Thursday's Game One, before Colin Schmid and Luke Watts fill their usual Game Two and Three starter spots. Schaeffer is making his second start on the season (1-1) with a 4.23 ERA.
Schmid enters the series with a 3.43 ERA and Luke follows that with a 5.99 ERA.
Offensively, Matt Vernon still leads things from the plate with a .319 average. Drake Zupcic is second on the team with a .288 batting average while Tyler Stroup follows that closely with a .286.
Jason Curtis (.263) is looking to extend his current reached base streak beyond 17-straight games, which he achieved just last Tuesday against Wake Forest. The streak is the longest a Mountaineer has achieved this year.
