BOONE, N.C. --  Appalachian State University men's tennis (12-8) displayed a valiant effort in a 4-2 defeat to a tough Davidson (16-7) team on Saturday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club.

The Mountaineers finish the regular season with a 12-8 mark including a 9-3 finish to the season after a 3-5 start. App will now await its quarterfinal opponent in the 2017 Sun Belt Tournament held in New Orleans at City Park Tennis Courts.

Due to the rainy weather at start time, the match was pushed back to 2:30 p.m. inside while the contest started with singles. Appalachian got the start it needed with a 2-0 lead in the first two matches.  Jack Maddocks tied his career high in singles wins at 13 after handing David Hager his sixth loss of the season with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win to give App the 1-0 edge. Scott Webster surpassed last season's win total in singles as he improved to 14-4 thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Shamael Chaudhry.

With App having all of the momentum, the Wildcats turned the corner capturing the next four matches to claim the win. Milo Bargeron fell to J.B. Gough in straight sets as the No. 4 in the lineup. The freshman fell in a close first set, 7-5, but was toppled in the second frame, 6-2.

Trey Morris fought valiantly in a three-set defeat to an opponent in Axel Fries that is now 18-4 on the year. Morris trailed after the first set before winning the second set, 6-4. Trailing 6-5 in the third set, Morris forced a tiebreaker, but would fall, 7-0. Alex Pavkovich recorded a hard-earned first-set tiebreaking victory against Artem Khrapko 7-6 (7-3). However, he would fall in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Alex Brea aimed to send the match into doubles as App trailed 3-2. Brea fell in the first stanza, 6-3, before falling in the final set to his counterpart, 7-5.
