Men's Tennis Wins Thrilling Match Over UNCG

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University men's tennis (10-6) won its fourth-straight match with a thrilling 4-3 victory at Deer Valley Racquet Club over UNC Greensboro (6-8) on Friday afternoon.

The Mountaineers have reached 10 wins for the fourth-straight season while the fourth-straight victory is a season long. A win on Saturday against USC Upstate will give App back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2011-12 seasons.

App battled all match long, and with the contest tied 3-3,  Alex Pavkovich came through in a big way as he clinched the match for Appalachian, defeating Daniel Hammarstedt in three sets as the No. 5 in the lineup. The freshman came back from a one-set deficit to upend his counterpart, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

“This was an exciting match to watch and be a part of,” said head coach Bob Lake. “The guys battled all afternoon, and Alex (Pavkovich) stepped up when we needed him to. I couldn't be more proud of the team today.”

The Mountaineers faced another deficit earlier in the match during doubles play with UNCG capturing the first match. Connor Thompson/William Albright dealt Scott Webster  and Milo Bargeron a 6-4 defeat.

After Alex Brea and Pavkovich tied up the doubles portion thanks to a hard-earned 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Warren Bryan and Logan Walker as the No. 3 tandem, Jack Maddocks and Trey Morris claimed the final doubles contest and the 1-0 lead for App with a 7-5 victory over Marcus Vidgren/Jack Burkill.

Singles play went back-and-forth as neither team won two-straight matches. UNCG tied it up at 1-1 with Maddocks falling to Vidgren 6-2, 6-3, while Morris continued his solid day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bryan as the No. 3 in the lineup. After Webster fell to Thompson 6-2, 7-5, Bargeron won his team-leading seventh-straight match over Albright in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

With App leading 3-2, Brea couldn't get over the hump as he was dealt a 6-4, 6-2 setback to Burkill, setting up the final match for the win.
