DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (7-6) swept past Bethune-Cookman (1-10) on Sunday morning in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Appalachian had a quick turnaround after yesterday's setback for a solid win. It's the second shutout of the season and the first since a 7-0 triumph against Lees-McRae.
The Mountaineers quickly dispatched the Wildcats in doubles competition before coming away with three singles matches to blank the hosts.
Scott Webster and Milo Bargeron blanked Greg Almedia and Pablo Lopez, 6-0, followed by Jack Maddocks and Trey Morris moving to 5-0 and clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph as the No. 2 doubles tandem over Juan Ruiz and Jose Plazas.
The dominating play went into singles with Bargeron netting his fifth-straight win over Pablo Lopez, 6-1, 6-0. Webster followed suit with a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 win against David Ocampa. Maddocks clinched the shutout for the Apps with his 6-3, 6-2 victory against Plazas.
Morris was ahead 6,-0, 5-0, against Almeida before his match went unfinished, while Alex Brea was in a tiebreaker in the first set 6--6 (4-4) against Ruiz when his match didn't finish as well.
Webster is now 9-3 on the season with his five-straight wins while Bargeron is 8-4 on the season. Maddocks grabbed his eighth win of the season in singles play to join Webster and Bargeron as one of three student-athletes with at least eight wins.
The Apps will play their second and third matches of the Daytona Beach road trip against Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and the following day against Oral Roberts at 9 a.m.
