Mountaineers Draw to 0-0 Tie in Sun Belt Opener

WASHINGTON - Appalachian State University men's soccer (3-5-3, 0-0-1 SBC) showcased another stingy effort on defense in its second-straight shutout and tie in a 0-0 draw against Howard (1-10-1, 0-0-1 SBC) on Saturday evening at Greene Stadium.

It's the first time App has blanked an opponent on the road since a 0-0 tie against Hartwick last season, while it's the first time since the prior campaign that Appalachian has collected back-to-back shutouts. It's the third shutout in the past five matches, and the defense has given up just two scores over the last five games (8 in prior five contests).

"It was a hard-fought point on the road in the Sun Belt," head coach Jason O'Keefe said after the conference opener. "We could have gotten more of the game but didn't. Have to give Howard credit for making things difficult for us. We will learn from tonight, recover and get ready for UNCA on Tuesday."

Both teams would come away with a pair of shots at the frame through the 110 minute of action with App firing away on an attempt in each stanza. Marc Pfrogner and Parker Washburn each had a shot on goal but would end in near misses.

Jake Chasteen helped App tally a third clean sheet this season with two saves playing the entire match.

Appalachian will return to action at home on Tuesday against UNC Asheville.
