Apps Fall to UNCW 5-2 in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis opened up with their spring season on the road this Saturday, where it fell 7-5 to UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Tennis Complex.

The Mountaineers (0-1) opened up by splitting the first two doubles matches by a score of 7-5.  UNCW's Gabe Hocevar and Agustin Savarino outlasted App State's senior Jack Maddocks and junior Scott Webster. Shortly after, freshman Milo Bargeron and senior Trey Morris defeated Josh Hublitz and Leon Black (7-5) to force the tiebreaker.

In the match that decided the doubles point, sophomore Alex Brea and freshman Alex Pavkovich fell to Daniel Groom and Ignasi de Rueda by a score of 7-5.

No. 102 Webster notched his first win of the spring season by defeating Josh Hublitz 6-3, 6-1. Morris was the only other Mountaineer responsible for a point as he came back beat de Rueda 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-3.

After Savarino won the first set 6-1, Maddocks made the second set interesting before eventually falling 7-5. Bargeron was defeated in the No. 3 singles match, 6-1, 6-1, by Andres Torres.

Pavkovich fell to Michael Copeland, 6-1, 6-3, in the fifth singles match of the afternoon. UNCW also came away with the last match of the day as Brea fell to Groom 6-3, 6-4.

The Mountaineers look to bounce back against Presbyterian in their first home match of the season. The match is set for noon on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Deer Valley.
