JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Appalachian State University men's soccer was unable to overcome a second-half goal by ETSU, dropping a 1-0 decision on Saturday evening.
I am disappointed with the result obviously, but I am really pleased with our effort," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "Unfortunately, we just need to add more quality moments in a 90-minute game to get the desired result on the road. Have to give the credit to ETSU, though, as they played well."
The Mountaineers (0-2) started off the match with a strong defense and the Buccaneers (2-1) was able to meet their effort. For the entire first half, the battle was had over the middle of the field as Jake Agnew (Farmington, Minn/Farmington) only had to make one save in his 36:44 of play.
The game was played to a deadlock until ETSU's Cameron Woodfin was able to find some room in the 51st minute and Fletcher Ekern found him on the left side for him to tap it in.
Leading Appalachian in shots on goal were Ian Bennett (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover)) and Cooper Coughlin (Suwanee, Ga./Lambert), who both were able to put pressure on ETSU's Jonny Sutherland twice. Also getting shots on the night were Jordan Melia (Manchester, England/Rivington & Blackrod) and Graham Smalley (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./First Flight).
Finishing up in the net for the Mountaineers was Jake Chasteen (Blowing Rock, N.C./Watauga), who led the way with two saves and the one goal allowed on seven shots faced.
The Apps will continue their road warrior mentality as they travel to play in-state ACC foe, Wake Forest on Tuesday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on the ACC Network Extra, viewable on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
