CONWAY, S.C. — Appalachian State University women's soccer fell in its final weekend contest with conference foe Coastal Carolina, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.Â
"Coastal Carolina was a very tall, athletic and organized team," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "We had some good movement off the ball and found some great sequences but still lacked that quality final ball. Sarah Moon made a huge impact coming into the match. We will continue to work this week and are excited to play at home this weekend.
The Mountaineers (5-5, 0-2 Sun Belt) kept up with the Chanticleers (5-3-1, 2-0) shot for shot in the first half, but couldn't maintain the effort in the second, getting outshot 18-9 overall.
Coastal Carolina was able to put away a goal early when Sam Patterson headed in a corner by Ambria Shutts in the 8th minute. The Chanticleers then scored in the 14th minute on an unassisted goal from the top of the box by Amber Adams. The final goal was in the middle of the second half at the 63rd minute when Daniella Famili knocked in a rebounded shot.
Leading the Mountaineers on offense was Erin Settle and Emmily Cowie who had two shots each. One of Settle's shot was on goal.
Also helping in the attack with one shot each was Jenn Bass, Jane Cline, Kelly Flanders and Jackie Nieradka. Sarah Moon also came in and provided a huge lift off the sidelines for the Mountaineers in her 45 minutes.
Primarily in the net for Appalachian was Sam Steyl. She had three saves in her 65 minutes and allowed the three goals. Also between the frames was Taylor Ray. Ray made one save in her 24 minutes.
The Mountaineers will return home next week to host two conference matches against Texas State on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. App State then takes on Georgia State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.Â
