Cowie's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-1 Draw

BOONE, N.C. — Sophomore Emmily Cowie scored her first goal of the season as Appalachian State women's soccer drawed a hard-fought, end-to-end battle with Texas State 1-1 in double overtime on Friday evening.

The Mountaineer midfielder received the touch from Erin Settle after a great cross by Kelly Flanders right to the front of the goal to put App State up 1-0 in the 40th minute.

"I'm really proud of our resiliency tonight and our team fighting until the very end," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "We always talk about grit and we always talk about finishing strong and about composure and making sure that we stay together no matter what. We are yelling 'Together!' all the time on the sidelines and it literally means that we're one and we're united and the people on the sidelines are fighting for the people on the field and the people on the field are fighting for each other and the people on the sidelines. We're going to get through whatever it is, we'll ride the storm, we're going to be OK."

Appalachian State (5-5-1 (0-2-1 Sun Belt)) were able to score first in the match and held the Bobcats (5-4-2 (2-0-1 Sun Belt)) to just three shots in the first half, but over the next half and two overtime periods would allow 12.

Texas State came out of halftime on a mission to put pressure up front. Then the Bobcats were able to tie up the match when Lauren Prater put a breakaway pass up to the team's leading scorer Kassi Hormuth in the 49th minute, who then had a one-on-one matchup with goalkeeper Sam Steyl.

Neither team would give an inch over the next 61 minutes in a physical battle to end the match. The Mountaineers had several close opportunities in the waning minutes of the match, but were unable to convert, whether due to Texas State's goalkeeper or just being a hair off the mark on the shot.

Leading the App State forward advance was Jane Cline who had seven shots on the match and two on frame. Right behind her was Jackie Nieradka and Cowie with four shots total and two on goal each. Alexa Asher also had both of her two shots on goal.

In the net for the entire 110 for Appalachian was Steyl who made three saves on the night with the one goal allowed on 15 shots faced.

The Mountaineers will continue their two-match conference homestand this weekend, playing next against Georgia State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
