Mountaineers Fall 2-0 to Longwood

FARMVILLE, V.A. — Appalachian State University men's soccer was unable to carry over momentum from its win on Sept. 13, dropping a 2-0 decision to Longwood on Saturday evening.

"Tonight, we had another tough result on the road, however, we did make some major improvements from our last road game," head coach Jason O'Keefe said.  "But unfortunately, we did not make the handful of plays in either box that you need to make to earn points on the road. We will get back to work on Monday and approach Tuesday game at home vs. Winthrop with great excitement to improve."

During the match, the Mountaineers (1-5) joined the Lancers (3-2-1) in wearing yellow laces in their cleats for the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer® Night. Lace Up started in 2011 in New Jersey as many youth soccer teams wanted to show their commitment and support in the fight against pediatric cancer. Today, teams across the nation represent from all sports both youth and professional with the Go4theGoal's Gold Laces.

The two teams started off the match evenly matched as both clubs brought speed and aggressiveness on the attack. Longwood narrowly outshot Appalachian in the first half 6-5 before the Black and Gold turned things around and managed a 9-6 shot advantage in the second.

But it would be the Lancers who found the back of the net on the night, as Max Poelker took a cross at the top of the box and fired it in the 40th minute. Zach Corcoran then slipped behind a defender on a through ball from Dan Campos and knocked home a crisp ball in the 54th minute, sealing the deal for Longwood.

The Mountaineers had a solid all-around team attack despite not finding the goals needed. Leading App State in shots was Cooper Coughlin with four, with Graham Smalley and Rian Phillips behind him with two. Stephen ChapmanThibaut Arpinon and John Walrath also had one shot.

Playing most of the game in the net for Appalachian was Jake Chasteen. In his 70-plus minutes, he snagged four saves and allowed the two goals. Getting a brief bit of action between the frames today also was Jake Agnew, who had two saves as well in 20 minutes.

The Mountaineers return home for their second home match of the season as they host Winthrop on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
