BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University men's soccer drawed with Winthrop on a penalty kick by Stephen Chapman in the 33rd minute, finishing 1-1 in double overtime on Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers (1-5-1) dominated the offensive third of the field but were just unable to get the final ball in the back of the net. The Eagles' (3-3-1) goalkeeper had eight saves on the day and the one goal allowed.
"I was extremely pleased that we didn't break tonight," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "We bent a couple times in the last 12 minutes and a few times in the overtime, but we didn't break and that was a good response. I think the challenge to the guys was that we need to grind out some of these games and it was really great to see the guys dig deep and manage the game and even create maybe two of three chances to win the game, which is not an easy thing to do. So, like I just told the team, as disappointed as I am that we didn't get the win, I'm extremely proud of their effort and the fact that we were able to get a point out of this and now we just need to build off of that going into the next two matches on the road."
Appalachian held a 17-9 shot advantage, having nine shots on frame compared to Winthrop's four. Where the Black and Gold really dominated was on corner kicks where they had 11 on the evening compared to the Eagles' one.
Chapman's penalty kick came off a great ball by Daniel Avila off the one Winthrop corner attempt.
The Eagles responded with 12 minutes left in regulation when Marco Gatzke headed in a cross from Alvin Konkoua to equalize the match. The teams then battled to the end of regulation and then into two 10-minute overtime periods with neither team willing to concede the game-winner.
Leading the Mountaineers on the offensive attack was Jordan Melia and Chapman with four shots each. Three of Chapman's were on goal, while two of Melia's were. Avila and Cooper Coughlin both had two shots with two of Coughlin's being on goal while John Walrath and Camden Harrison each had a shot on goal.
Playing the entire 110 minutes and getting his first start in the net was Jake Agnew. Agnew only allowed the one goal, getting three saves on the night.
The Mountaineers will go on a short two-match road trip beginning on Saturday, Sept. 24 against Davidson at 6 p.m. From there, Appalachian travels to UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Kickoff for that match is slated for 7 p.m.
