Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A pro-Mountaineer crowd of 3,175 turned out at BB&T BallPark in uptown Charlotte on Tuesday evening but red-hot Wake Forest ruined the party by handing Appalachian State University baseball a 10-7 defeat.
Wake Forest (27-17), which has claimed five wins over top 15 teams in the last 12 days, banged out 13 hits and won for the seventh time in eight games.
Things started well for the thousands of Mountaineer faithful in attendance, as Tyler Stroup led off with a double into the right-center field gap and scored on Brian Bauk's RBI single to give Appalachian State a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
However, the App State bats quickly cooled off and Wake Forest pitchers John McCarren (6-2) and Drew Loepprich limited the Mountaineers to just one hit from the second inning through the sixth. The Demon Deacons' prolific offense plated four runs in the second and four more in the sixth to grab a commanding 8-1 advantage.
Never a club to go down without a fight, Appalachian State made it interesting with three runs in the seventh inning, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, Wake Forest's Stuart Fairchild capped a four-RBI night with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh that prevented App State from cutting the deficit to less than three runs.
Matt Vernon, Zach Hummel and Bauk finished with two hits apiece to lead the Mountaineers' 10-hit attack. Bauk and Grayson Atwood each had two RBI, with Atwood's coming on a mammoth home run over the Piedmont Natural Gas picnic area beyond BB&T BallPark's left field stands in the eighth inning.
Appalachian State returns to Sun Belt Conference action on Friday when it opens a pivotal three-game series versus Arkansas State. The series opener is set for 6 p.m. at App State's Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
