JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (2-3) suffered a 6-1 setback to a tough ETSU (3-3) squad on Saturday at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
The Bucs started off strong winning all three doubles matches with
Scott Webster and
Jan-Willem Kleynhans falling, 6-2, to David Biosca/Rogerio Ribeiro at No. 2 doubles. The tandem of
Oliver Casey and
Jack Maddocks suffered their setback of the season as partners in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, at the hands of Ismael Merino/Diego Nunez.
ETSU kept the momentum rolling as
Zach Bost and
Trey Morris faltered in a valiant effort, 6-4.
Appalachian did play better in singles competition. Bost was the lone student-athlete to win a victory to give Appalachian its only point of the afternoon. Bost dealt his counterpart a 6-3, 6-3, in a showdown of No. 6's. At the No. 5 position, Morris came back after losing, 6-2, in the first set to win set two, 6-2, but would fall in the third set, 6-4.
Maddocks also had his singles match go to a third set, but fell in final set at the No. 3 slot. Casey at the one spot, fell to David Biosca, 6-2,6-2 while Webster fell to his opponent, 6-2, 6-2 to Rogerio Ribeiro between No 2's. Willem-Kleynhans fell in his single match as the No. 3 player, 6-4, 6-1.
Appalachian will look to right the ship at USC Upstate next Friday at 12 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
