MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (6-4) had its four-match winning streak snapped in a tight 5-2 setback to a tough College of Charleston (6-3) squad Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The score didn't reflect how close the match actually was, as four of six singles matches went to three sets while the doubles matches where just as tight.
CofC captured two of three doubles matches to go into the singles portion with a 1-0 lead. The No. 2 tandem of
Scott Webster and
Jan-Willem Kleynhans kept their hot-streak going with a fifth-straight victory in doubles play over Charlie Chriskey and Josh Record, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles,
Zach Bost and
Trey Morris were tripped up by just one point, 7-6, to Vasily Kichigin and Matt Daly.
Oliver Casey and
Jack Maddocks fell to the tough duo of Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas, who were 6-1 entering the match. The matchup of No. 1's went to the visitors by a score of 6-3.
Casey brought the Apps back to a 1-1 tie in singles action with his fifth-straight win over Zack Lewis, 6-0,6-1. Since moving over to the No. 2 spot, Casey has yet to lose improving to 5-0 and 7-3 overall.
The other lone point came from Maddocks' third-straight triumph over Encinas in a valiant three-set match at the three spot, 7-6, 5-7, 10-6. The Cougars would take the other four matches to clinch the victory. But three of those setbacks went to the third set.
Morris won the first set against Kichigin, 6-2, before falling in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3, in the matchup between the No. 5's in the lineup. Bost also took his match to a third set after falling to Garrett Gordon early, 6-4. Bost came back to tie the second set, 3-6, but fell in the tiebreaking game, 6-1.
Kleynhans was the third student-athlete for Appalachian to go into the third set. Following the 6-1 first-set defeat, Kleynhans took the 6-2 victory before suffering the setback to Ghriskey, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, in the fourth spot. Webster would have his winning streak snapped in the 6-3, 6-3, loss to Estevarena.
The Apps will look to get back on track this Thursday at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C., with first serve set for 2:30 p.m
