JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Scott Webster and Trey Morris earned singles victories, but Appalachian State University men's tennis fell to Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia State by a 5-2 final in a neutral-site contest on Sunday.
The Mountaineers (8-11) dropped the doubles point to fall behind the Panthers (8-12) early and were never able to fully recover.
Appalachian's No. 3 doubles pairing of Morris/Oliver Casey earned an 8-5 win, but losses at the No. 1 (8-6) and No. 2 spots (8-2) gave Georgia State the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, three contests went to decisive third sets as Morris grabbed a thrilling win at No. 6 (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) and Webster was a winner at No. 2 (1-6, 6-0, 6-2).
Webster's victory moved him to a team-best 15-4 on the season and marked his first victory at the No. 2 spot this year while Morris moved to 11-8 this year including a 9-5 mark at No. 6.
Zach Bost was able to force a third set at No. 4 singles, but ultimately fell by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 and the Panthers picked up straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 to take the match.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday when they play host to Gardner-Webb as part of a season-ending, three-match homestand.
