BRISTOL, Tenn. – A strong performance from a nationally-ranked opponent proved too much to overcome as Appalachian State University men's tennis suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 63 ETSU on Friday at the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Mountaineers (8-10) got solid performances in doubles play and at the top of the singles lineup, but the Buccaneers (9-7) defended their home court successfully to move to 5-0 at home this season.
ETSU was able to take the doubles point to earn an early edge, though Appalachian did not go down easily. The Mountaineers' No. 2 tandem of Oliver Casey/Scott Webster dropped a narrow 8-6 decision while the No. 3 team of Steve Lake/Trey Morris suffered an 8-4 loss.
In singles play, Casey fought valiantly at the No. 1 spot, but ultimately fell by a final of 6-4, 7-5 while Webster lost a three-set heartbreaker by a score of 7-6, 0-6, 10-7 at No. 2.
The Buccaneers were able to pick up straight set wins in each of the remaining four singles contests to pick up their fifth-straight win and their second 7-0 victory of the season.
Appalachian State wraps up weekend play when it takes on Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia State on Sunday in a neutral site contest. The match is slated to be played in Johnson City, Tenn..
