Appalachian State University baseball plays its final non-conference road games of the season this week with tilts at Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State. The Mountaineers face Virginia Tech on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va. and square off against ETSU on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.

On Tuesday, Appalachian State makes its second trip in as many years to VT's English Field to face the Hokies. Behind a complete-game shutout by then-freshman Sean Mason, App State blanked Virginia Tech, 11-0, on April 22 of last season.

A win over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech on Tuesday would be the Mountaineers' 13th over a power-conference opponent since 2012 and their third this season. Appalachian routed the ACC's Wake Forest, 10-1, on Feb. 25 and topped No. 16 Maryland of the Big Ten, 9-7, three days later.

In addition to the two victories, the Mountaineers have also had several close calls against power-conference competition this season. Of their eight losses to power-conference foes this season, half of them have come by three runs or less (4-2 vs. Maryland, 6-4 at NC State, 6-3 at Georgia and 11-8 vs. Wake Forest).

Unfortunately for Appalachian State (13-31), narrow losses have been a staple of its frustrating 2015 campaign, with 15 of its 31 overall defeats coming by two runs or less.

Since jumping out to a 15-12 record with a three-game sweep over then-No. 1 Virginia and wins over Clemson and Florida State, Virginia Tech (20-24) has lost 12 of its last 17 contests.

On Wednesday, Appalachian concludes its non-conference road slate at ETSU (16-27). The game was originally scheduled to be played on April 14 but was postponed due to rain.

After a two-week delay, the Mountaineers and Bucs will finally meet for the 133rd time since 1955. App State has only played Western Carolina more during that 60-year stretch (152 meetings).

The Mountaineers own a 76-55-1 advantage in the last 132 games between the two schools, which are separated by just 55 miles. Appalachian swept the clubs' two-game season series last year with a 7-6 walkoff win in Boone and a 9-5, 10-inning triumph in Johnson City. The season sweep was Appalachian State's first over ETSU since 2010.
